Korea extends advantage while Singapore ends third round in T17

Team Singapore moved two spots down to tied-17th with their one-over-par total as Korea remains the team to beat after they extended their advantage atop the leaderboard with a three-shot lead over Team USA after the third round of the World Amateur Team Championships (WATC) on Friday.

The battle for the Espirito Santo Trophy heads into the final day at the Tanah Merah Country Club with the Korean trio of Aijin Sung, Soomin Oh and Seojin Park firmly in contention to retain the trophy.

Sung returned with a four-under-par 68 while Oh’s 73 helped the team reach 16-under-par, giving them a three-shot cushion over the Americans at the conclusion of the penultimate round of the women’s competition.

“It was a good round. Today my putter was very good as I made some good putts from inside 10 feet. But the only thing I didn’t like was that I didn’t hit the fairways as many times as I wished I could. If I had hit the fairways more, I would have got a lower score,” said Sung.

When asked about her team’s chances, the 18-year-old said: “I think for tomorrow, if everybody in the team plays their own game well, we should have a good chance of getting our hands on the trophy.”

Meanwhile, Inez Ng, who signed for a 71, continued her resurgence after her previous rounds of 79 and 72.

“The first round obviously didn’t go as planned, but I just tried to forget about it. It’s a new day, and each round is going to be different. I’m just going to stick to my processes and stay in the present.”

“Personally, I have to keep doing what I’ve been doing the last two days and just keep giving myself opportunities. And for the team, we just want to end on a good note,” said Ng.

Hosted by the Singapore Golf Association (SGA) and conducted by the International Golf Federation (IGF), the WATC is held every two years and is widely regarded as the pinnacle of amateur team golf.

The women will contest the Espirito Santo Trophy from October 1–4, followed by the men competing for the Eisenhower Trophy from October 8–11.

In total, 36 teams will vie for honours in each championship. This year marks only the fifth time the WATC is being staged in Asia, with previous editions held in Japan (2014), Malaysia (2002), the Philippines (1996), and Hong Kong, China (1984).
